She's at the center, every step of the way. Ten years of turning girls' aspirations into choice, choice into contraception, contraception into opportunity, and opportunity into health systems built to last.

2016 — 2026

A decade, as it actually
happened.

JANUARY 2016
A360 begins
Adolescents 360 launches, funded initially by the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, led by PSI, SFH Nigeria and PS Kenya.
JANUARY 2016
2016 – 2018
Listening & insight gathering
Formative research and Human-Centered Design (HCD) work with girls, husbands, mothers, providers and community influencers across Tanzania, Nigeria and Ethiopia surface the real barriers to contraceptive access.
2016 – 2018
2016 – 2020
First investment phase: design, test, adapt, scale
Using HCD and adaptive implementation, A360 designs, implements and scales ASRH interventions across four geographies. Over roughly 2.5 years of implementation, more than 400,000 adolescent girls (15–19) take up a modern contraceptive method.
2016 – 2020
2021
Kenya joins; Tanzania transitions to government
Binti Shupavu launches in Kenya. In Tanzania, A360 pursues an expedited, government-led institutionalization and handover of Kuwa Mjanja — documented in a peer-reviewed Frontiers publication.

2020 – 2025
ONGOING
Government ownership & health-system integration
MMA is institutionalized and scaled by Nigeria's government across four northern states; Smart Start is scaled by Ethiopia's Federal Ministry of Health as RISE across 11,000+ kebeles; Kenya's Binti Shupavu deepens county-government partnership.
ONGOING
2026
Ten years of learning and impact
Over 1 million adolescent girls have voluntarily adopted a modern contraceptive method with A360's support. The evidence base continues to grow — A360 published new conference research on continuation and government-led scale as recently as July 2026.

Why A360?

Reimagining Adolescent Health

The Problem
Traditional ASRH programming often:
🎯 Starts with contraception instead of girls' aspirations.
🏠 Overlooked girls lived realities
💰 Ignored economic vulnerability
👧Treats girls as beneficiaries rather than co-designers
👥 Failed to address social and gender norms and rarely engaged the people influencing girls’ decision
The Problem
The Response
Human-Centered Design
PSI and partners chose to start by listening — treating adolescent girls as co-designers of their own solutions, not passive beneficiaries of a program built for them.

Design consortium: PSI, IDEO.org · UC Berkeley Center on the Developing Adolescent · Society for Family Health Nigeria

A360’s GLOBAL USER JOURNEY

2016 -2020 - Phase 1: 1st Investment

A360 amplify: 2020-2025

The vision: impact at scale

  • Under this investment phase for A360, the project focused on three strategic pillars.
  • Pursue strategic adaptations to increase program impact at the client / user level.
  • Pursue institutionalization and government-led scale to ensure that A360’s interventions are sustained beyond
    the life of the investment.
  • Generate and disseminate evidence to address key gaps in policy and practice (globally and locally).

Designed with girls

How 10 years of listening
became a method.

01

Listen

Formative research directly with girls, husbands, mothers and providers.

02

Understand

Insight gathering surfaces real barriers — stigma, distance, autonomy, cost.

03

Design

Human-Centered Design turns insight into brands, tools and counseling approaches.

04

TEst

Prototyping with real girls and communities before any scale-up.

05

Adapt

Adaptive implementation adjusts the model to context — agrarian vs. pastoralist, married vs. unmarried.

06

Scale

Government-led institutionalization carries what works beyond the life of the project.

"Girls wanted those around them to believe in their potential and their capabilities, despite the challenges." — from A360's insight-gathering phase in Kenya, 2021.

One of the greatest helps I received here is the education on contraceptives. It's something girls like me in the village had no way of learning about before.
Emilly, Kenya
I feel safe, strong, and motivated since joining MMA. I find myself communicating with people around me with ease; something I struggled with in the past.
Maijidda, Northern Nigeria
I want to see my sister become a person who can fully choose what she wants for her future. I want her, like all girls in my nation, to have the same opportunities as boys.
Ayana, Ethiopia
Do you know why the Ministry of Health is motivated to implement Smart Start? It's because the unmet need for family planning among married adolescent girls aged 15–19 in Ethiopia is 20.5%.
Dr. Alemayehu Hunduma, FMOH Ethiopia
9ja Girls is all about girls. People say girls choose contraception because they are promiscuous... But I know that contraception allows girls like me to reach their dreams.
Beth, Southern Nigeria
I tell them, if your boyfriend doesn't want to use a condom, you can get contraception and he will never know. And then I refer them to a positive provider to find out more.
Amina, Tanzania
